The sun had set, and fog loomed over the darkened night. Only a hint of light fluttered as the clouds moved slowly in front of the full moon. A cold wind brushed Zoe’s neck. She turned the corner onto 2nd Avenue, downtown Conway, and walked a few steps. On the right, the music, and lights of a party, in a four-story brick office building drew her attention. She looked up and saw two shadowy figures on the balcony. As she walked closer, she could only hear mumbled words. Her heart stopped as she became uneasy and decided to turn back when she heard something falling, the thud, and then silence. She turned quickly and saw a woman in a red dress lying motionless in the street. Zoe ran over to her and bent down. Her hand shook as she placed her two fingers gently on her neck. There was nothing but a cold, still body beneath her fingers. Zoe moved her eyes slowly toward the fourth floor. Above, a man leaned over the balcony. As he stood there emotionless, Zoe’s eyes met his piercing blue eyes before he turned away and disappeared. Her heart raced like a horse about win and a constant motion of hoofs hitting the pavement in slow motion. Clap Clap, Clap Clap….
Snap out of it, she thought, as she took out her cell phone and dialed 911. Nothing but a fast busy signal. Try again; she could hear her thoughts yelling. Panic consumed her. An older model car was heading toward her. She turned her body around swiftly and hit both her hands on the front of the car’s left driver’s side fender. She locked eyes with the driver. It was him. It was the piercing blue eyes that burned into hers.
